Da Nang, along with Quang Nam Province’s Hoi An and Quang Tri Province’s Hong Ha City, has made the list of the top 40 cities worldwide which are considering for the 2017 - 2018 edition of the One Planet City Challenge (OPCC).
The 3 Vietnamese cities are amongst the 40 finalists out of the 132 cities across 23 countries worldwide that participated in the global challenge this year.
Initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), OPCC, previously known as the Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC), recognises and rewards cities that aim to provide sustainable housing, transportation, and energy for their residents while simultaneously engaging their citizens and acting as inspirational role models for other cities around the globe.
Under OPCC’s rules, invited cities in participating countries are required to report their ambitious and innovative climate actions, and to demonstrate how they are delivering on the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.
Data is entered on the carbonn® Climate Registry, and outreach and support is provided to cities in collaboration with ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.
Three finalist cities per country will be invited to participate in the related We Love Cities campaign to engage their citizens in expressing support for their cities, as well as sharing ideas for improvement.
Simultaneously, an international expert jury will review all finalist cities, selecting both national and a global winner, which will be announced in June/July 2018, and thereafter celebrated in a global awards ceremony which is scheduled late this year.
Since the inception of the Challenge in 2011, WWF has engaged over 400 cities across 5 continents.
Hue City marked the country’s first entry into EHCC in 2016, and it was named as ‘Viet Nam’s National Earth Hour Capital’.
