Awareness Raising for Environmental Students on Waste Management and Reducing Open Burning Activities

The Center for Natural Resources and Environment Communication (CNREC), in cooperation with the Vietnam Environment Administration and the Environment Faculty of the Ha Noi University of Natural Resources and Environment (HUNRE) organized the training course on Waste Management and Reducing Open Burning Activities for students at Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment.

The training course aims to raise awareness and professional skills for environmental students on waste management and solutions to reduce open burning activities. About 100 undergraduate students from environmental faculty of various university, consisting Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment, Hanoi University of Technology, National Economics University and Viet Nam National University participated the course.

The Program equipped students with the knowledge of the Stockholm Convention and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to waste management; characteristics of POPs/UPOPs as defined by the Stockholm Convention; analysis of status of policies and practices on management, collection and treatment of solid waste, waste containing POPs and open burning activities; and analysis of the status of UPOP emissions due to open burning activities in Viet Nam and their impacts on the environment and public health; knowledge on BATs and BEPs solutions, technology flowchart, applying technological solutions on waste management and treatment to minimize impacts of open burning activities; principles and application scope of supportive economic instruments and analysis of current national economic resources for waste management in order to minimize impacts of open burning activities; and pplication of communication tools to develop communication plan to reduce open burning activities.

The Education Curricula was integrated with series of activity under the Clean Up the World Campaign (CUW) 2018 hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Established by Australia in 1993, held in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) on global scale, the Clean Up the World Campaign is one of the largest community-based environmental programs in the world. The Campaign is organized on the 3rd week of September every year to encourage enterprises, public communities, schools, individuals and nations across the globe to carry out activities such as tree planting, community education, environmental contests and exhibitions, waste collection, treatment, recycling, etc. In Vietnam, the CUW 2018 comprised relating activities such as (i) Organizing campaign to collect and treat rural solid waste and plastic wastes, (ii) Launching ceremony "Say no to disposable plastic products", (iii) Organizing workshop on Replication of model for collection, treatment of solid waste in rural areas, (iv) Propagating and mobilizing people and households to develop habit of sorting waste at source, (v) Planting tree and (vi) Organizing training course for students on waste management and reducing open burning activities.
