Hanoi strives for smoke-free tourism environment

The agreement aims to protect scenery in Hanoi’s attractions while creating a clean and attractive tourism environment for tourists.

The Hanoi Tourism Association, in conjunction with the city’s travel agents, last week held a conference to promote a smoke-free environment in restaurants, hotels and tourism spots in Hanoi.

The delegates from travel businesses agreed upon measures to develop a smoke-free tourism environment, including no tobacco purchasing or advertising under any form. They also committed to regularly advise visitors not to smoke in smoking-banned areas.

At the conference, travel businessese signed an agreement to abide by the Law on Tobacco Harm Prevention, aiming to develop smoke-free space model. Accordingly, the agreement aims to protect scenery in Hanoi’s attractions while creating a clean and attractive tourism environment for tourists.

Speaking at the conference, Chairman of the Hanoi Tourism Association Nguyen Manh Than hoped that the model will be replicated across Hanoi and other cities in Vietnam.

In the first ten months of 2018, the number of holidaymakers to Hanoi is estimated at more than 13.1 million, a 16.8% increase from the same period last year, according to the Hanoi Statistics Office.

The city welcomed over 3.4 million foreign visitors, marking a 16.9% rise from the same period last year. They come from nearly 190 nations and territories. Among them, the number of overseas guests from China was up 25.4%, Malaysia up 27%, the UK up 170.5%, Taiwan (China) up 52%, the US up 21.1%, South Korea up 17.6% from the same period last year.
