Glowtec (Environmental) Vietnam, the Weekly and Dat Do District authorities have coordinated to launch a campaign to protect the local environment.
Under the sponsorship of Glowtec (Environmental) Vietnam Co., and the Weekly, the Dat Do District People's Committee officially launched an environmental protection campaign late last week for Phuoc Hai Town, Dat Do District. Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.
This campaign is set to span three years, ending 2010, with the aim of raising awareness among Phuoc Hai locals about protecting and improving the environment. According to Mai Ngoc Thuan, chairman of Dat Do District People's Committee, there will be three main programs in this campaign which will work in harmony with one another.
"First, we will work with Semla Program, an organization coordinated by Vietnam and Sweden, to raise people's awareness by focusing on each residential area. We have already established a series of rules that they have to follow. Otherwise, they will be fined. Also, we have set up teams of promoters who will talk with the locals about the campaign," said Thuan.
In addition, the authorities will also concentrate on drying fish at one place. Currently, the locals are often drying their fish on the beach which is much polluted and ruins the beauty of the place. "I hope this will work out well so that we can improve our beach," added Thuan.
The last program will be building roads so that dump trucks can easily get in and collect rubbish. This will be more convenient for the locals during their daily travels. "We will build a road along the beach. On one hand, it is convenient for transportation. On the other, we hope when our people see the beautiful road and beach, they won't damage the scene by dumping rubbish on the beach," Thuan said.
At the ceremony, Diep Quoc Ke, CEO of Glowtec handed over a USD 5,000 check to the local people's committee to help with the campaign. "We realize that the environmental pollution situation in Vietnam is in red alert, so in cooperation with the Weekly we hope to contribute our knowledge to help people here understand and be more aware of environment issues, making Dat Do District become greener, cleaner, more developed and thus improving the quality of people's lives," Ke said.
At the signing ceremony, the local authorities, representatives of Glowtec, the Weekly and Semla Program, promoters and local students went to the nearby beach and collected rubbish along the coast.
Phuoc Hai Town is intended to be a tourist attraction, so along with its beautiful scenery; it must be clean to attract tourists. As a coastal town, its people live mainly on fishing and are unaware of the need to protect the environment. Therefore, the program is promising to lift the locals' lives up as well as making Phuoc Hai a better place.
On this occasion, Pham Huu Buu, director of Semla Program, presented a check of VND l00 million and 20 dump cans to the district.
Glowtec is a provider of environmental solutions consulting, designing and building services. The 100% Singapore-owned company has been in Vietnam since 1997.
