Denmark is considering giving financial support to projects in Vietnam that make use of the clean development mechanism (CDM) to introduce a sustainable environmental protection programme, according to Danish Ambassador Peter Lysholt Hansen. During 2007-2009, the Danish government agreed to provide USD 380,000 for CDM projects in Vietnam.
The aim is to improve the capacity and raise awareness of CDM, as well as helping Vietnam to meet its national targets on environmental protection and climate change, the Danish ambassador said during a conference in Hanoi on February 19, 2009.According to the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Nguyen Manh Hien, Vietnam’s current priorities are to carry out projects that will help the country to adapt to climate change and reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that are emitted into the atmosphere.Although CDM is a relatively new concept in Vietnam, the number of projects utilising this is on the increase. As of February 2009, the Rang Dong Oil Field Gas Recovery and Utilisation project in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province and the Song Muc Hydropower Regeneration project in northern Thanh Hoa province are complying fully with the CDM process.Vietnamese agencies have already approved 78 CDM projects that focus predominantly on renewable energy sources.According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, renewable energy, including hydropower and wind turbine power, have great potential for the deployment of CDM projects in Vietnam.
