With the advantage of having many diversified tourism resources as Tram Chim national park, Gao Giong eco-tourism area, Sa Dec flower village, in the 2011-2015 period, Dong Thap tourism sector plans to develop eco-tourism, cultural & historical tourism based on exploiting available resources associating with protecting and renovating eco-environment landscape, ensuring sustainable tourism development.
Dong Thap has over 10 islets scattering at almost all districts and many historical, cultural, revolutionary relics as Nguyen Sinh Sac relic site, Xeo Quyt relic site, monument of Go Quan Cung – Giong Thi Dam, ... Moreover, such ancient relics as Go Thap relic, Buu Lam pagoda, Huynh Thuy Le ancient house, ancient houses in Sa Dec town and Hong Ngu district,… also indicate the intersection of various cultures.
Besides, Dong Thap is home to many famous traditional crafts as Dinh Yen mat, nem Lai Vung (fermented pork), Long Khanh weaving and international border gates as Thuong Phuoc, Dinh Ba. So the province has potential to develop shopping tourism.
In the coming years, Dong Thap determines to focus on: Upgrading and expanding Nguyen Sinh Sac relic area; developing cultural - spiritual festivals, events; training tourism human resource; facilitating investment in tourism sector; promoting ecological conservation area and historical, cultural relic area in Dong Thap Muoi to become theme tourism sites which can connect to domestic and international tours.
Infrastructure and human resources are identified as weaknesses of Dong Thap tourism, so need to be focused to develop. The province will give priorities to investment in essential tourism sites as Go Thap relic site, Xeo Quyt tourism site, Gao Giong eco-tourism area, Nguyen Sinh Sac relic site, Tram Chim National Park, Sa Dec flower village. The province also intends to expand and develop the service, tourism, entertainment works and tourism accommodation facilities and focuses on developing the stop-overs on tourist routes. Dong Thap is trying to innovate business methods; improve service quality and diversify tourism types. These aims to improve value and attraction of local tourism products; extend tourist’s length of stay, increase their tourism expenditure.
In the 2006-2010 period, the province invested hundreds of billions VND for Gao Giong, Xeo Quyt, Go Thap tourism area and Tram Chim National Park. Meanwhile, other economic sectors, especially private sector invested to build and upgrade restaurants, hotels and develop more tourism services. So far, tourism routes have been upgraded to serve for traveling of tourists.
Along with developing infrastructure and human resource, Dong Thap still has much work to do such as promoting tourism and calling for investment, socializing tourism, ... Dong Thap strives to exploit available tourism potentials to bring tourism into an important economic sector of the province.
