The United Nations in Vietnam, on Dec. 2, organized a seminar on “Viet Nam and Climate Change: A discussion paper on policies for sustainable human development” with the participation of many experts within the country and overseas.
At the seminar, the UN’s official launched a report on policies for sustainable human development, identifying and analysing key challenges to Vietnam that trouble the country in responding to climate change, clarifying climate change’s causes… thus helping Vietnam continue on a path of sustainable human development.
A series of recommendations were made for authorities of all levels, national bodies, non-governmental organizations, enterprises and international partners to take further consideration and discussion in a context of serious threat of climate change that Vietnam is facing and Vietnam’s increasing position in international talks on climate.
A number of recommendations took interest in cooperative actions between the UN, international organizations and the Vietnamese Government, local authorities, NGOs and business community.
At present, Vietnam, with international assistance, has set up and mounted the National Target Program in Responding to Climate Change, focusing on building institutional and personel capacity. Nevertheless, further international support is needed and Vietnam should have access to other international funding sources in the framework of the UN’s Convention on Climate Change.
By receiving the support, Vietnam would be able to limit the negative impacts of climate change on livelihood of Vietnamese people, boost the development of advanced technologies, make the national production less-carbon consumed.
Climate change is an urgent call for human awareness and popularization of appropriate development manners. Vietnam’s noble aspiration of development should be ensured in spite of great challenges of climate change. By doing determined actions, we could turn climate change into an opportunity to realize our sustainable human development goals
