A scheme for building Van Don in the northern province of Quang Ninh into a key economic zone by 2020 and a high-class tourism centre has recently been approved by the Government.

According to the plan, the Van Don Economic Zone will cover the whole Van Don district's 2,171.33 square kilometers.

The Van Don Economic zone is scheduled to be developed into a marine eco-tourism site as well as an attractive entertainment destination in the country's northeast region beside the Hai Ha industrial zone, the Dinh Vu - Cat Hai economic zone and the Mong Cai border gate city.

The zone’s main functions have been identified as a high-quality sea and island eco-tourism centre, an international aviation centre, an environment-friendly industrial zone, a high-ranking service centre and an international trading hub.
