The Prime Minister has recently approved the project “Development of Can Tho City 2020 and strengthening adaptation capacity of urban areas” funded by the World Bank (WB).

The project will be implemented from 2016 to with its total investment cost of more than 322 million USD, of which the non-refundable fund from State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) is 10 million USD; the WB’s loan is 250.36 million USD, the remain is the counterpart fund of the Government of Viet Nam.
The project aims to develop a sustainable urban area; strengthen its climate change adaptation capacity; support Can Tho to become the center of the whole Mekong Region; mitigate vulnerability caused by floods and inundation; improve the city’s traffic system and connect it with that of the region itself and of other regions.
It also aims to control inundation of the core of the city; improve quality and effectiveness of infrastructure services; protect and improve environmental sanitation at Ninh Kieu District; improve basic infrastructure and provide public services, strengthen capacity of drainage and wastewater collection system at Ninh Kieu; and strengthen management of urban area for climate change adaptation.
