A seminar titled “Vietnam copes with climate change” was organised on July 31 in Hoi An by the Government Office in co-ordination with Office of the Party Central Committee, Office of the President, National Assembly Office and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
The seminar aimed to raise the awareness of civil servants in Central Offices in coping with climate change, through which improves effectiveness in advising task for Party and State leaders and in providing information, raising awareness among communities.
Minister, Chairman of the Government Office Nguyen Xuan Phuc said climate change’s consequences like global warming and sea-level rising were greatest challenges to human in the 21st century. Under the impacts of climate change, natural resources became more and more fierce throughout the world.
According to the World Bank’s assessment, Vietnam would be among 5 nations that most influenced by climate change. In case the sea-level rises by 0.7-1 meter, a large area of the Cuu Long River delta and Red River delta would be eroded if Vietnam is not well-prepared.
Some studies reveals the average temperature has increased by 0.5-0.7 degree Celcius and the sea level has risen by 20 centimeters in Vietnam in the last 50 years. In 2100, the average temperature could increase by 3 degree Celcius and the sea level could rise by 1 meter in Vietnam, which would affect 10% of the polulation.
Having recognised the impacts of climate change, the government has implemented various actions as joining and ratifying the United Nations’ frame Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol; approving the national programme on coping with climate change…
International community has highly valued Vietnam’s efforts in coping with climate change, securing sustainable development of the country and contributing to common efforts of the world.
Phuc stressed “coping with negative impacts of climate change is the duty of all ministries, localities, sectors and every citizen”.
