The United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) was held at the United Nations Headquarters from June 12 to 16in New York.
Nguyen Phuong Nga spoke at the conference.
Attending the conference were representatives from more than 160 UNCLOS member countries and representatives of agencies established under the Convention. The delegation of Vietnam led by Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga - Head of Vietnam Permanent Mission to the UN attended the conferences.
The speeches at this year's conference affirmed the importance of the Convention as a comprehensive international legal framework that governs activities and issues related to the sea and oceans and proposes many solutions to problems. It deals with the management, conservation and sustainable use of the sea, oceans and marine resources, unsustainable fishing, climate change adaptation and sea level rise, aiming to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 14.
Many delegates emphasized the need to further develop and perfect the legal framework for sea and ocean management, soon complete the Rules for Exploration and Exploitation of the Oceanic Bottom and welcome the outcome of discussions at the Commission. The Preparatory Committee for the Development of Legal Instruments under the Convention aims to regulate the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity in waters beyond national jurisdiction.
Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga highly appreciated the outcome of the UN Summit on Promoting the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 14: Sustainable Conservation and Sustainability of the Sea, Oceans and Resources recently held the week before as well as the activities of the bodies established under the Convention.
Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga affirmed that Viet Nam has actively cooperated with other countries through bilateral and multilateral forums such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum on marine environmental protection; Marine scientific research; Search and rescue; Responding to emergencies and negative impacts of climate-related crimes, and combating crime in the South China Sea. At the national level, the Government and people in Vietnam have been implementing environmental protection measures such as protecting marine ecosystem, responding to emergency situations and negative impacts of climate change in coastal areas of Vietnam.
