Under new proposals put forward by the Viet Nam Railway Corporation, filming, photographing and running cafe shops on Ha Noi's famous 'train street' could soon be a fineable offence.

The move aims to ensure safety on the rail line that has become increasingly popular with foreign tourists. The Viet Nam Railway Corporation, who put forward the proposal, has asked for the support of the people's committees of Ba Dinh and Hoan Kiem districts, as well as local authorities in Hang Bong, Cua Nam, and Dien Bien Phu wards.
According to the operator, sections of the railway along the Ha Noi - Dong Dang line have recently been packed with tourists seeking thrills as the train passes close to the residential houses on either side, especially during the National Holiday (September 2).
To guarantee security, order and traffic safety, the operator wants local authorities to strictly deal with the sales of cafes, drinks and other goods near the rail line.
The operator stressed they are ready to cooperate with the local authorities when needed.
In October 2019, cafes on the street were forced to close down due to safety concerns after a surge in popularity.
The violations subdued somewhat with a drop in visitors and lockdown restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with the reopening of international tourism, cafes resumed operations in April this year.
Most cafe owners have a train schedule visible to warn customers and visitors and are required to arrange seats inside buildings to ensure safety.
Business households here would like the current model to remain as the international tourists visiting this distinct and memorable attraction provide a livelihood for them.
