The tourism sector of Thua Thien Hue province aims to gradually reduce the use of plastic products, with the goal of eliminating many types of disposable plastic products from tourism services. Consequently over 200 hotels and tourism agencies have applied green criteria to their services and at destinations.

The Thua Thien Hue Provincial Department of Tourism has introduced a plan to reduce plastic waste, including “No Disposable Plastic Products”, in the 2023-2025 period. It will inform 100% managers of hotels, travel and transport companies and 90% of tour guides about the harmful effect of plastic waste and the national and local programs on reducing plastic waste.
As a result of these efforts all of travel and transport companies and tourist destinations will commit to reducing plastic waste and to implementing at least one measure to minimize the use of disposable plastic products.
All managers have been trained on building annual assessment plans on plastic waste reduction. The plan also aims to build 5 to 6 tours and 5 to 6 community-based tourism sites that don’t use disposable plastic products at all.
Next year 50% of three to five-star hotels in the province are expected not to use disposable plastic products and the figure will increase to 80% by 2025.

Nguyen Van Phuc, Director of Thua Thien Hue’s Tourism Department, says: “We have built an action framework, including criteria for plastic product reduction until 2025. The criteria can be flexibly applied to businesses, hotels, and the local community. Tour guides will join the local effort in the process.”
Thua Thien Hue’s “No Disposable Plastic Products” plan aims to develop green tourism, protect the environment, and contribute to promoting Hue as an ecological, environment friendly, and smart heritage city.
