The 37-million-euro project on anti-erosion and sustainable protection of the Hoi An coastline has recently been launched. It is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Union (EU).

Through the WARM Fund (Water and Natural Resource Management Fund), the project is carried out to develop comprehensive solutions to Hoi An coastline erosion, provide measures for coastal sustainable protection, and respond to the urgent local needs for housing stability and economic recovery.
Present at the project launching ceremony were Ho Quang Buu, Deputy Chairman of the Quang Nam provincial People’s Committee, Olivier Brochet, Ambassador of the French Republic to Vietnam, and others.

The project will contribute to enhancing the capacity to protect the entire coastline and sustainably restore the beaches through two main solutions.
The first solution includes structural protection measures (such as wave barriers and groynes) for the 5,000-metre coastline from the river mouth to the Victoria Resort and a soft nature-based solution.
Another is the sacrificial beach nourishment in the extended area to the north (An Bang Beach), which will help restore the sedimentary balance, maintain the local coastline, and reduce the risk of erosion behind the structures.
According to Mr. Ho Quang Buu, the project is an important step towards ensuring the future development of the Hoi An coastline through comprehensive solutions.
The project will effectively contribute to reducing coastal erosion, ensuring the safety of local residents' lives, promoting business activities, especially in tourism, creating more job opportunities, and enhancing the resilience of the locals to the impacts of climate change.

According to Olivier Brochet, Vietnam's coastal areas are vulnerable to extreme weather phenomena that will increase in the coming decades.
Therefore, it is necessary to have long-term solutions and a reassessment of coastal tourism development.
The project is an opportunity to develop a pilot model of integrated management involving the province, the city, and stakeholders in the tourism sector.
Through the WARM Fund, the EU and its member states are committed to supporting Vietnam in preparing for and responding to natural disasters, restoring ecosystems with nature-based solutions, enhancing the resilience of the locals to climate change, and contributing to achieving international climate commitments.
On the sidelines of the ceremony, a technical meeting with stakeholders was held to develop a roadmap for the project implementation, both institutionally and financially, to ensure high-quality and sustainable project outcomes.
