Thieng Lieng Hamlet, an island off the outlying Can Gio District, has become HCMC’s first community-based tourism destination, offering a variety of unique travel experiences.

Located about 60 kilometers from downtown HCMC, Thieng Lieng Hamlet provides a tranquil escape for those looking to leave behind the city’s hustle and bustle. With its serene environment and natural beauty, it has become an ideal destination for travelers.
Recognized as HCMC’s first community-based tourism destination by the HCMC Department of Tourism at the end of 2022, Thieng Lieng has since gained popularity, being listed among the top 10 most fascinating tourist spots in HCMC.
Visitors to Thieng Lieng can enjoy a wide range of cultural and culinary experiences. One highlight is Giong Chua Mountain, the only rocky mountain in HCMC, which is a must-see for nature enthusiasts. Additionally, Ba Ngu Hanh Temple is perfect for those interested in exploring local culture. The temple hosts an annual festival on the 19th and 20th days of the second lunar month, where both locals and tourists can come to pray for health, peace, and a prosperous harvest.

Another highlight of Thieng Lieng tourism is its diverse cuisine. Each household offers visitors food and drinks made from ingredients grown in their own gardens, such as butterfly pea flower tea, coconut ice cream, aloe vera juice, and salted limeade. Travelers can explore the hamlet by cycling along its narrow paths, stopping by local homes to rest and enjoy various dishes.
When people think of Thieng Lieng, many envision the expansive, gleaming salt fields. These fields have been the cornerstone of livelihood for families in this remote island hamlet for generations. As Thieng Lieng’s popularity among tourists has grown, locals have transformed these salt fields into new attractions for visitors to explore.
Nguyen Thi Bach Tuyet, director of the Thieng Lieng Agriculture Trading Service and Community Tourism Cooperative noted that tourism provides additional income for local residents, especially those involved in salt production. The sale of souvenirs boosts their earnings, encouraging them to preserve and develop their traditional craft village.
Tourists can also immerse themselves in the enchanting melodies of traditional music at Tu Huynh’s household, relive nostalgic memories with a collection of rural life items at Ut Hai’s household, and relax with a herbal foot soak at Nam Tuyet’s household.
Nguyen Tuan, a visitor from Tan Binh District, shared his experience: “Aside from the serene natural landscapes, Thieng Lieng offers a multitude of unique experiences for tourists, from cycling through the salt fields to savoring home-cooked meals and enjoying traditional music. Despite the challenging journey to reach the hamlet, the unique experiences and warm hospitality of the locals make it a destination worth visiting.”
