(TITC) - According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, the number of international visitors to Vietnam in May 2022 obtained 172.9 thousand arrivals, an increase of 70.6% compared to the last month and 12.8 times higher than the same period last year. In the first 5 months of the year, international visitors to Vietnam reached 365.3 thousand arrivals, 4.5 times higher than the same period last year.

Although the number is lower than the pre-pandemic period, it shows the tourism industry a positive signal after 2 months of fully reopening. Especially, at the 31st SEA Games, Vietnam became the spotlight drawing the attention from athletes, sporting delegations and visitors in Southeast Asia come to gather, compete and enjoy Vietnam tourism.
International visitors came to Vietnam via airways in the first five months reached 320.7 thousand arrivals, accounting for 87.8% of the total number of international visitors to Vietnam, 6.3 times higher than the same period last year; the rest are travelling via land and sea.
In the first 5 months, source regional markets around the world showed a dramatic growth compared to the same period last year. Particularly, there were 230,988 visitor arrivals from Asia market, a 3.2 times increase; 49,675 visitor arrivals from Americas region, a 22.9 times increase; and 65,253 visitor arrivals from Europe region, a 10.7 times increase.
The two leading source markets in the first 5 months were Korea, with 56,501 visitor arrivals, a 3.3 times increase and America, with 40,997 visitor arrivals, a 29 times increase. Noticeably, the numbers of arrivals from 2 markets in Southeast Asia with robust recovery are 23,951 visitor arrivals from Cambodia, an increase of 87 times; 17,321 visitor arrivals from Singapore, up 44.7 times. Additionally, for Europe, Vietnam welcomed 10,992 visitor arrivals from the UK, an increase of about 16 times, 10,897 visitor arrivals from France, an increase of 16.7 times; 10,373 visitor arrivals from Germany, an increase of about 21 times. The number of visitors from Australia reached 16,864arrivals, an increase of 33 times. For Asian market, there were 17,546 visitor arrivals from Taiwan, an increase of 2.8 times; 16,592 visitor arrivals from Japan, an increase of nearly 4 times. And with Southeast Asia, there were 11,502 visitor arrivals from Malaysia, an increase of 19 times; 11,292 visitor arrivals from Laos, an increase of 2.6 times; 10,920 visitor arrivals from Thailand, an increase of 8.3 times. China, in particular, there were 32,133 visitor arrivals to Vietnam in the first 5 months, however, was recorded to have a downturn of nearly 6% compared to the same period last year due to the “zero COVID-19” policy.
According to the data of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, domestic visitors in May 2022 reached 12 million visitor arrivals, up 243% compared to the same period of 2021, in which about 8.2 million overnight visitor arrivals. In the first 5 months of the year in general, domestic visitors reached about 48.6 million visitor arrivals. Total tourist receipts achieved VND 211 thousand billion.
The monitoring travel trends tool by Google Destination Insights shows that Vietnam is wearing its crown as one of the fastest growing destinations globally, with the growth from 50% to 75%. The highest number of search volume for Vietnam tourism comes from countries such as the US, Singapore, Australia, Japan, India, France, Germany, Thailand, Canada, The UK.
According to the latest report on 24th May 2022 of World Economic Forum (WEF), the Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) of Vietnam in 2021 placed 52th, up 8 grades compared to 2019 and stands among the 3 highest growing countries in the world.
It can be said that, for all these positives results above of Vietnam tourism recently, it has shown a great proof for the success in preventive and control the pandemic in Vietnam, the safe, flexible adaptation of the tourism industry as well as the coherent policy of resuming fully tourism activities, the gradual recovery of international flight routes and other policies related to immigration and health care favouring international visitors.
