Untreated organic waste and below-standard garbage dumps in Vietnam produce 75 million tons of CO2, equivalent to exhaust discharged by 15 million average-sized cars. This information was reported by Doan Van Khai from the Vietnam Urban Planning Program at a workshop on controlling solid waste in the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho on March 17.
Khai said by 2020, waste in Vietnam will yield 113 million tons of CO2.
The Deputy Director of the Institute for Environmental Sciences and Technology under the Hanoi Construction University, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Thai, said Vietnam discharges more than 13 million tones of solid waste annually. 75% of the volume is buried at 85 garbage dumps and most of them fail to meet standards.
