Recently, the Management Board of Cham Islands Marine Protected Area (Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province) has regularly carried out activities to protect the marine and island environment and conserve biodiversity.
Many environmental protection awareness activities has been held in Cham Islands.
Several specific action programs have been implemented, such as maintaining the campaign to eliminate single-use plastic products and establishing the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) model in Bai Huong and Bai Ong villages, along with organizing plastic waste collection activities.
During 2023 - 2024, as part of the program "Enhancing plastic waste reduction efforts in Cham Islands," the Management Board developed a set of criteria for evaluating zero-waste practices in schools, installed two recycling collection models and four communication panels on waste classification, and promoted the 4R principles (refuse, reduce, recycle, reuse) in schools.
Additionally, they introduced the waste life cycle model at Quang Trung Primary & Secondary School and produced three environmental awareness videos.
The local people in Cham Islands participate in underwater waste collection to protect the environment.
In efforts to restore the coral reef ecosystem, the Management Board of Cham Islands Marine Protected Area has transplanted over 3,000 coral colonies. The selected coral species include branching, plate, and table corals, with branching corals being the most common.
Besides, regular plastic waste collection is conducted twice a year across six beaches and coral reef areas in Cham Islands, covering coral reef ecosystems, seagrass beds, and coastal areas.
The Management Board of Cham Islands Marine Protected Area has surveyed the rhesus macaque population to propose conflict mitigation and conservation measures. Additionally, the plans for the sustainable management of stone crab resources have been developed.
