During May and June, the terraced fields of Mu Cang Chai District in Yen Bai Province transform into stunning landscapes resembling ink wash paintings. This is when the Mong ethnic people channel water into the fields, turning them into giant mirrors that reflect the clouds, mountains, and trees. This season, known as the ‘water pouring season’, is one of the most beautiful times of the year in Mu Cang Chai, drawing crowds of visitors.
Mu Cang Chai is the most beautiful during the water pouring season
With the onset of summer showers, the Mong people start channeling water from the high mountains to their fields to prepare for the new crop. The flowing water creates an enchanting scene as it courses through each field, with the brown earth and shimmering water reflecting the sky and clouds. The young rice plants interspersed among them contribute to a breathtaking and poetic tableau.
Thao A Co from Lìm Mông Village in Cao Phạ Commune says after three months letting the soil rest, he begins plowing and getting the water flow into his terraced fields.
Co said: “The heavy rains this year have made plowing and harrowing easier, ensuring ample water for rice planting.”
Giàng A Dê from La Pán Tần Commune traverses nearly all the terraced fields in the district, capturing stunning photographs to showcase the beauty of his homeland to both domestic and international tourists. He said: “The rainfall is abundant during this season. It makes the landscape picturesque and attracts visitors.”

Tourists to Mu Cang Chai during the water pouring season have the opportunity to walk along winding trails through the terraced fields to witness their beauty firsthand, and join local agricultural practices like building banks, and plowing and planting rice.
These activities offer many insights into the culture and daily life of the local people. The most scenic areas during this season are the communes of La Pán Tẩn, Dế Xu Phình, and Chế Cu Nha, where the terraced fields display a majestic blend of natural beauty and generations of creative labor by the Mong people.
Silvio, an Italian tourist, was astonished by the beauty of Mu Cang Chai. He and his wife even experienced a plowing session, gaining a deeper appreciation of the labor involved in taking care of the terraced fields.
Vang Thi Ly, owner of Homestay Helo Mu Cang Chai, said: “Tourists particularly enjoy the experiences of beeswax painting and farming. Many find these activities to be unique and memorable parts of their visit to Vietnam.”
In addition to the terraced fields, visitors can explore Khau Phạ Pass, one of Vietnam’s four most beautiful passes, offering panoramic views of Mu Cang Chai. Thrilling paragliding activities are also on view.
