Restoring the ecosystem and biodiversity of the Dam River

The Tam Ky city People's Committee in Quang Nam province has just organized a ceremony to kick-start the restoration and development of the ecosystem of the brackish water area of the Dam River.

The event was in response to the "National Biodiversity Restoration Year - Quang Nam 2024"; commemorating 65 years since Uncle Ho's visit to the fishing village; the Traditional day of Vietnam’s fishery sector (April 1, 1959 - April 1, 2024).

At the launch event, Mr. Nguyen Minh Nam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tam Ky City, highlighted the significance of the Dam River reservoir where covers approximately 650 hectares with 250 hectares of water surface.

The river boasts a unique and precious ecosystem, rich biodiversity, and serves as a "green lung" of the city, playing a vital role in the environment and landscape.

"According to a survey by The Vietnam National Museum of Nature the Dam River is home to 295 species, including 33 species of fish, 16 species of amphibians and reptiles, 31 species of birds, notably including the "Asian Openbill" listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book.

There are also 211 species of insects and 170 species of high plants. Particularly, the Dam River with its pristine ecological beauty, along with the national historical relic system of Ky Anh tunnels, holds great potential for the development of experiential tourism in Tam Ky city," Mr. Nguyen Minh Nam said.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Nam highlighted the city's efforts in promoting awareness about protecting seafood resources and wild bird species, as well as controlling the upstream water sources of the Dam River.

Significant resources have been allocated to planting trees to restore the ecological system and biodiversity of the river, along with adding various types of shrimp and fish to diversify the local seafood resources.

At the launch event, community representatives committed to protecting and restoring the Dam River ecosystem. Quang Nam province and Tam Ky city leaders planted native trees and released thousands of fishes to enhance the biodiversity of the Dam River ecosystem.
