The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in conjunction with the World Bank last Friday officially launched a project on phasing out Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) – ozone-depleting substances – in the 2013-15 period.
In the first phase, the World Bank will provide US$9.7 million in non-refundable aid extracted from the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol on ozone-depleting substances.
Designed to help Viet Nam reduce its consumption of HCFCs in the polyurethane foam sector, the project will apply the latest technology to eliminate nearly 2,500 tonnes of HCFC-141b in 12 large foam production enterprises.
It will also support policies, regulations and technical activities to curb HCFC consumption, while helping to reduce energy consumption and increase energy productivity for household air conditioning units manufactured in Viet Nam.
Viet Nam joined the Montreal Protocol in January 1994.
