The dredging of Hue’s Phat Lat Canal, which has been blocked for years by debris, will help improve the flow of An Cuu and Nhu Y rivers. The water flow of the 2.5km-canal that connects the two rivers has been blocked for years by trash thrown away by local residents.
The work, including a 1.5m-deep dredging and the building of a canal embankment, will be completed in the middle of 2010.
Another dredging project will kick off late this week on the 3km Dong Ba Canal.
The dredging will be done 2m below the water surface and take out an estimated 130,000cu.m of deposit. The project will end in March.
The Dong Ba Canal, which is a 70m-wide man-made canal built by the Nguyen dynasty to protect its ramparts, has been blocked by debris as well.
Funds for the dredging work on the two canals total VND14.2 billion (US$726,000), of which the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment gave VND11.9 billion.
