Accelerating digital transformation to facilitate tourism recovery and development

(TITC) - Within the framework of the Vietnam - Asia Digital Transformation Summit 2022 (Vietnam - ASIA DX Summit 2022), on 26th May, in Ha Noi, the Vietnam Software & IT Services Association (VINASA) coordinated with relevant units to organise the seminar “Digital transformation in Tourism - Trends and Solutions”. Mr. Ha Van Sieu, Vice Chairman of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) attended and spoke at the seminar.

VNAT’s Vice Chairman Ha Van Sieu stated, from the perspective of the tourism management agency, digital transformation is seen as the process of forming the foundation and environment for connection, transactions, and interactions among subjects in the tourism industry by using digital tools, applications and data. Interactive transactions in tourism become remarkably effective thanks to the development of digital technology.

The Vice Chairman also mentioned 4 main trends in the digital transformation in tourism. Firstly, the emerge of smart tourism helps satisfy personalised demand and unique experience, and requires the establishment of big data about destinations, tourist products, and services providers in the the value chain.

Secondly, visitors tend to actively join in the tourism value chain, which allow them to interact with many relevant sides in the tourism industry. Therefore, it is necessary to develop digital solutions that facilitate the involvement of visitors.

Thirdly, the trend of forming alliances and promotion of sharing economy are emerging in the tourism industry. The demand for linkage among service providers are enormous, driven by the need for sharing costs, revenues, services... The trend has resulted in the development of digital solutions to tourism service supply and consumption, such as smart travel cards, vacation sharing apps, etc. Vice Chairman Ha Van Sieu emphasised, it is necessary to accelerate the digitalisation of tourism service facilities, consumption process, connecting service providers.

Last but not least, maximising emotion in travel experiences. This is one of the most obvious needs of visitors, which is to have a unique and beyond reality experience such as virtual reality technology (VR). Digital transformation should help facilitate the effective interaction between the real world and the virtual world.

VNAT is preparing to implement the project on digital transformation in the tourism industry, with some pillars of: (1) Forming a digital platform connecting management information from the central to local levels and tourism service providers; (2) Developing tourism national database; (3) Establishing e-commerce platform that connects tourism service providers and tourism consumers.

VNAT’s Vice Chairman Ha Van Sieu believes that these digital platforms will actively support relevant sides in the tourism industry to operate on digital environment. Tourism businesses and technology businesses should seize the opportunity triggered by digital transformation, create unique and impressive digital tourism products to satisfy new tourism demand.

Mr. Lam Nguyen Hai Long - Vice Chairman of VINASA said, to promote resilience and breakthrough for the tourism industry, digital transformation is one of the most effective solutions.

According to Mr. Long, in tourism businesses, digital transformation must be driven by the highest manangement level and must be fully understanded by every person in the businesses. Digital transformation would help tourism businesses to accelerate market expansion, increase profit and save cost.

Digital transformation would provide small businesses with flexibility, tools and data allowing them to seize opportunities to compete in the marketplace in a completely different way than ever.

“Digital transformation will have a big impact that we don't necessarily have to predict or even measure right now. However, the components of a technology architecture that drive digital transformation are already in place, namely cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence, internet of things, and more recently blockchain and NFT. Therefore, we need to join hands to act as soon as possible”, emphasised Mr. Long.

At the seminar, participating delegates also listened to presentations on topics: recent situations and difficulties in digital transformation in the tourism industry; digital transformation in tourism businesses; digital transformation solutions in the hotel industry, etc.
