3 herds of elephants seen in Vinh Cuu Relics and Nature Reserve
Update: 05/01/2010
In late December 2009, local rangers have seen three groups of about eleven wild elephants roaming near the forest management station of Vinh Cuu Relics and Nature Reserve in Phu Ly Commune, Dong Nai Province and in the residential area in hamlet 7 of Ma Da commune in search of food. The herds of elephants including cows, bulls, youngsters and babies were seen from sunset until dawn of the next day, said local sources.
Vinh Cuu District has taken measures to protect wild elephants and ensure safety for local people and their properties that are threatened by the big animals.
Local authorties in coordination with Vinh Cuu Relics and Nature Reserve have worked out schemes to preserve the elephant herds and raise public awareness of the need to protect the elephants.
The rangers have also guided local people in using such traditional methods as fire lighting and drumming to drive away the animals when being attacked and how to avoid confrontation with wild animals.
