Red river levels at record low

Update: 08/01/2010
The water level of the Red river reached its lowest level at 0.5m, reported the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting (NCHF) on Jan. 8.

The Red river drought linked to the El Nino weather pattern, caused a chain reaction of damages to adjoining Da, Thao and Lo rivers.
The power industry said that Hoa Binh, Tuyen Quang and Thac Ba reservoirs are facing a water shortage of 2.6 billion m3.
The large-scale impact burdened irrigation, power and agriculture sectors with difficulties in supplying water for the upcoming winter-spring crop in the northern region.
The situation could worsen as the temperature in northern Vietnam is expected to excel between 0.5-1.5 degrees Celsius as the El Nino trend continues until April, said NCHF./.
