Tourism plays active role in addressing climate change

Update: 11/01/2010
Tourism is an industry that creates motivation for drastic development of many national economies as well as the whole world. International tourism turnover accounts for 9.3 percent of the global GDP in 2009.

In addition to be a contributor to national economic development, tourism significantly helps address social issues, particularly employment. In the year of 2009 alone, the global tourism sector has offered over 210 million jobs, equal to 7.4 percent of created jobs throughout the world.

Nowadays, tourism has been actively getting involved in addressing global climate change. It is doubtless that tourism is among service industries that most influenced by weather and climate, and in its turn, has considerable impact on environment. The World Tourism Organization and the World Travel and Tourism Council have recently reached an agreement on greenhouse-gas reduction and climate change adaptation.

Vietnam has set out its National Target Program to address climate change, specifying that it is responsibility of the whole political system, society, authorities, sectors, organizations and individuals, with high consensus and determination, to cope with climate change. The tourism sector has been mounting various measures to protect environment, develop sustainable tourism and join hands with other relevant industries to participate in anti-climate change battle on earth.
