Youth Month to focus on environmental protection, climate change

Update: 24/02/2010
Many members of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union from the seven southeastern cities and provinces will attend the annual Youth Month opening in HCM City on Feb. 28, union officials told the media on Feb. 22.

This year’s event, which will focus on environmental protection, will also promote the role of youth in socio-economic development.

Youths from the region will plant trees and collect rubbish strewed along the city’s rivers and canals and disseminate information on the impact of climate change.

Union members from Dong Nai province will take part in 79 environmental projects – symbolising the organisation’s 79th anniversary this year – that will include collecting rubbish from streets, schools, and public places in 11 districts in Bien Hoa City.

The HCM City unit will hold an environmental painting contest, carry out works to beautify the Sai Gon River’s banks, organise the “green Sundays” campaign, and take part in Earth Hour on March 27.

It will build charity houses for 70 disadvantaged families during the month and, according to Le Quoc Phong, its deputy head, will add more than 8,000 new members in the period.
