Zoning and devising schemes for environment protection of islands and the sea, and the use of their resources, were discussed at a workshop in Hanoi on March 12. The workshop began by briefing attendees on the relevant international laws as well as Vietnam’s own laws on sea use planning and zoning.
The participants put forward a scheme to protect sea and islands and exploit their resources under the Law on sea resources and environment.
Sea and coastal areas where human activities are focussed always suffer the risk of being affected by natural calamities, said Deputy Head of the General Department of Sea and Islands of Vietnam Nguyen Chu Hoi.
Apart from the benefits of exploiting resources in these areas, Vietnam is facing degradation in the quality of the environment due to the impact of the nature and human socio-economic activities, Hoi said.
The workshop emphasised the necessity of zoning the sea and coastal areas and put forward schemes on the use of their resources.
It also stressed that effectively exploiting and using these areas while ensuring ecological and environmental safety is a practical necessity for sustainable development.
