The central province of Thua Thien-Hue has approved a project on the preservation of saola and other indigenous bovines.
The Chief of provincial’s People’s Committee, Phan Ngoc Tho said on Feb.23 that the 72,495 USD project is jointly sponsored by Cambridge University and Darwin Organisation through the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
The Saola, a type of antelope, is a new species discovered to exist only in Vietnam in 1992 and may be one of the rarest mammals on the planet.
The project is being carried out by Thua Thien-Hue’s forest rangers force over a period of 33 months at the Saola preservation zone and Bach Ma National Park. It includes planning, conducting research, and managing forest and preservation zones to better protect this scarce species, especially from being hunted, as well as raising public awareness./.
