The Provincial Party Committee issued Action Program 08 on August 18, 2021, on strengthening environmental protection and striving to build Phu Yen into a green, clean, beautiful, and environmentally friendly destination. After more than 2 years of implementation, with the drastic participation of the whole political system, the awareness of the people and communities about the role and meaning of environmental protection has been clearly raised, gradually changing the behavior of organizations and individuals and taking many practical actions to contribute to environmental protection.
The Department of Education and Training collaborated with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and environmental protection organizations to implement a model of sorting and reducing waste at schools. Mr Truong Van Bi, Deputy Head of Kindergarten-Primary Department (Department of Education and Training), said: The province currently has 361 schools from kindergarten to high school with about 196,000 students. The Department of Education and Training has implemented the school model without garbage and has been responded to by a large number of teachers and students. The Department has also developed materials for environmental protection education in extracurricular teaching at grades 3–12 and implemented many activities of collecting, sorting, treating waste, and reducing disposable plastic items.
The province currently has established more than 160 clubs and models of women participating in environmental protection, with more than 1,800 members. The Provincial Women's Union mobilized members and women to participate in self-management groups to protect the environment in residential areas, build environmentally friendly villages, hamlets, and residential areas, and organize cleaning, collecting waste, sorting, and treating waste at the source. According to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, on April 4, 2022, PPC issued Plan 78 to implement the Provincial Party Committee's Action Program 08. To implement this plan, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment collaborated with departments, agencies, units, associations, unions, and localities in the province to strengthen propaganda and build many models of environmental protection. In localities, many models of environmental protection have been implemented; therefore, the living environment of people is increasingly changing in a positive way.
According to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, among the 10 targets to be implemented by 2025 of Action Program 08, up to now, there have been 3 targets that have been met and exceeded, including: an industrial park with a central wastewater treatment system and automatic wastewater monitoring system licensed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (reaching 100%); medical solid waste treated to meet standards (reaching 100%); and the percentage of rural population with access to clean water according to national standards (exceeding the target of over 60%). The province will continue to implement the remaining targets until the end of 2025.
The province has recently paid great attention to investment, attracting resources to support environmental protection. Many domestic and foreign environmental protection organizations have implemented many projects in Phu Yen. A number of projects have been implemented effectively in Phu Yen, such as promoting efforts to reduce ocean plastic waste, managing plastic waste in Vietnam in Phu Yen, improving the capacity to protect and preserve the Hon Yen coral ecosystem, treating environmental pollution in Xuan Dai Bay, supporting women in informal garbage collection, etc.
Comrade Nguyen Thai Hoa, Department of Natural Resources and Environment Deputy Director, said: The Joint Vietnam-Russia Tropical Science and Technology Research Center is implementing ecological and biodiversity research activities, developing solutions for forest management and protection, biodiversity conservation in Ca Pass-Hon Vong Phu area, and restoring coral ecosystems in Hon Nua area (Dong Hoa Town)... In the coming time, the province will continue to strengthen the mobilization and attraction of foreign donors and non-governmental aid sources, attract investment projects on waste treatment, and prioritize projects with modern and environmentally friendly technologies.
