The Government has pledged to take all steps to maintain Phu Quoc Island off Kien Giang Province as a clean tourist destination to ensure its sustainable development.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved an overall scheme to protect the environment on the island by hedging the so-called paradise land from negative impacts. Under the scheme, proper waste treatment is the prerequisite for all tourism projects there.
All waste on the island must be treated according to the national environment standards before it can be discharged into the environment. Special environment protection policies will be implemented, including the imposition of an environment fee, and restriction of those production projects unfriendly to the environment.
The local forest will be protected alongside the expansion of mangrove forests and the development of a coral and sea grass reserve.
The 561-square-kilometer Phu Quoc Island is planned to become a tourist island capable of attracting two to three million tourists by 2020.
