The 10 highlight environment events in 2010

The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (MoNRE) announced the 10 most outstanding events in 2010 on December 28 at the conference reviewing in the achievements of 2010 and preparing for the implementation of the 2011 plan.

1. MoNRE successfully organized the ASEM Forum on Climate Change and Adaptation Measures on September 6-7, 2010 in Ha Long City, Vietnam.

2. Vietnam has completed the second national notice for the UN’s frame convention on climate changes at the 16th UN conference on climate change which took place in Cancun in Mexico in December 2010. The second notice focuses on the national inventory of greenhouse gas in 2010 and estimating the greenhouse gas emission for 2011-2030.

3. The Dong Van Stone Plateau Geological Park was granted the certificate on joining the global network of the geological parks by the UNESCO Vietnam national committee on December 1, 2010. This is the second geological park in South East Asia and the first park of its kind recognized as the member of the network.

4. Vietnam successfully organized the third national environment conference on November 17-18, 2010, where 77 most individuals were awarded the Environment Cup 2010 for their achievements in the environment protection.

With a lot of events held on the sideline of the conference, people agreed to amend the Law on Environment Protection, build up the national action plan for the period of 2011-2020, and proposed to increase the budget on the environment protection to two percent by 2015.

5. The National Assembly ratified the amended Mineral Law on November 2010 at the 8th National Assembly’s session. The new law has replaced the 1996 law.

6. The National Hydrometeorology Centre provided an accurate  weather forecast for the most important days of the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.

7. Government agencies reviewed the implementation of the Land Law, clarifying the most important issues.

8. Government agencies have wrapped up the land inventory and drew a map showing the land use situation. The agencies obtained the information about the natural land area of administrative agencies, the situation of used land and suggested the measures to increase the efficiency of land use and management.

9. The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment organized the Week of Sea and Islands 2010 in Dong Hoi City in Quang Binh Province in early June 2010. This is the first festival of its kind which has been very successfully organized with a series of events relating to the sea and islands in Vietnam.

10. The Hanoi University of Natural Resources and the Environment was established on August 23, 2010 under the Prime Minister’s decision. This is a very important step toward the developmentof the human resources for the natural resources and environment sector.
