Summer Campaign on “adaptation to climate change” launched

Update: 15/07/2011
Recently, the 2011 Summer Campaign with the theme “adaptation to climate change” was launched in Long Thoi Commune, Nha Be District, Ho Chi Minh City.

The campaign’ launching ceremonies were also held in localities where Holcim has plants such as Phu My Commune, Tan Thanh District, Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province (June 28); Binh An Commune, Kien Luong District, Kien Giang Province (June 29) and Thanh My Loi Commune, District 2, HCM City (June 30).

The campaign, jointly organized by Holcim Vietnam Co. and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), aims to build a community network on environmental protection through operation groups for the environment and raise awareness of the community, especially students, on climate change through communications activities. It runs from April to July 31, 2011 with many activities to attract the participation of the local governments and local youth unions.

The campaign is one of the activities within a four-year cooperation deal (2009-2013) between Holcim Vietnam and IUCN to raise public awareness on environmental and biodiversity protection. In any activity, Holcim Vietnam has always created favorable conditions for the participation of partners, local governments, Holcim staffs and the local community, through which raise their awareness on sustainable development.

The theme of the campaign held in 2009 was “classification of garbage” and in 2010 was “protection of clean water resources”.

Holcim operates in more than 70 countries. Holcim Vietnam currently employs 1,500 people at its four technologically advanced cement production sites and 11 modern ready-mix concrete batching plants in addition to the HCM City office.

Vietnam became a state member of IUCN in 1993 and a country office was set up in Hanoi the same year. Programs of the Vietnam IUCN office in Hanoi concentrate on the fields of biodiversity protection, environmental awareness, environmental economy, conservation of forestry, sea ecosystems and coastal areas, reserves, sustainable use of natural resources, wetlands, water resources and environmental planning. During the 2007-2010 period, IUCN Vietnam focused on four target programs of administrative management, environmental planning, environmental services and climate change.
