Upstreaming to Choi waterfall

Update: 21/12/2011
Located on Luoi Hai Mountain, Choi Waterfall is considered the diamond of Cu Dong commune, Thanh Son district, in the northern province of Phu Tho.

If you are looking for a weekend getaway this time of the year, the 80km journey from Hanoi to this beautiful area is a good choice. It is especially beautiful in autumn.

From the center of Cu Dong commune, the route to the waterfall is not a smooth ride in the least, but it is worth the trek to take in some lovely scenery and the lush green cornfields of the Choi villagers.

After traveling along the three kilometer path, visitors reach the falls and must then start to conquer them. The Choi waterfall is actually a system of large and small falls located close together. From a height of 50 meters, the white fall looks like a silver carpet striking under the glistening sunrays. The stream runs through large rocks as the sponges and water streams overwhelm the area making it completely white. It is covered by dense green trees and on the rock walls are interlacing root sets of ancient trees.

Climbing a short sloping section to the second fall, you will find a panoramic view downstream from the waterfall. The stream is a long, sinuous streak of silver winding through the immense green forest and off in the distance, the scenery is blanketed in rice and corn fields and studded with farmhouse roofs. A sense of the magnificence and romance of Thanh Son is very apparent from this glorious vantage point.

The next level of the falls requires a trek up the rather tricky terrain of a slope with stiff rock walls which can be quite slippery so caution is advised. However, the beauty of the falls is a worthwhile result of the challenge for the adventurer who likes to experience true nature.

The trek is not complete until you reach the third level of the waterfall, which has a pure, very poetic stream like Sleeping Beauty in the primitive forest. It sneaks through slots in the rocks and sometimes pours down the cliffs On the two banks are giant trees scattered with colorful butterflies.

At the end of the stream is two small falls running to a small valley where tourists can swim freely after getting tired of trekking. However, the water is rather deep so travelers need to wear life-jackets just to be sure.

According to locals, the peak of the waterfall is on the top of the high mountain and the only way to see it is upstreaming the fall. If you are really brave and have no fear, don’t hesitate but pack a bag and be very careful.
