Rare flora and fauna species found in Phu Quoc National Park

(TITC)- Recently, the Phu Quoc National Park (Kien Giang Province) and Animal Rescue Center have found some rare local species of fauna and flora such as Sus scrofa, Pteropus, gibbon…, specially, Liparis cf. rhodochila rolfe (Nhan Diep luoi do) and Calanthe lyrogolossa Reichenb.f (Ai Lan la dep) are found for the first time in Viet Nam.

Currently, some areas of Phu Quoc National Park including Bai Thom, Cua Duong and Ham Ninh communes are still home to primary forest with plentiful fauna and flora system, contributing to scientific research and ecological environmental preservation on this island.

Phu Quoc National Park covers an area of 31,422 ha with 3 functional areas including strict protection zone, ecological rehabilitation section and subdivision of main – service – research.

According to Deputy Director of Phu Quoc National Park, Mr. Nguyen Van Tiep, since the establishment of the National Park in 2001 and UNESCO’s recognition of Kien Giang world Biosphere Reserve, the Park has enhanced strict conservational activities. Therefore, the number of fauna and flora species has been increasing significantly with 30 species of mammals, of which 5 species are recorded in Vietnam Red Book as wolves, white monkey…; 200 species of birds with 4 species in red list of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and 3 species in Vietnam Red Book; 50 species of reptiles with 9 species in red list of IUCN and 18 species in Vietnam Red Book…. In addition, the flora system also has 1,164 species of higher plants including 80 species of orchids …

With above special and unique biodiversity values, Phu Quoc National Park proves it to be a destination for tourists as offering a wide range of activities such as camping and trekking. Here is also an ideal spot for those who want to study the tropical forest.
