Biodiversity Conservation in Southern Truong Son

On 25th June, in Da Lat City (Lam Dong), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) held a workshop to assess the current status, challenges and propose solutions for biodiversity conservation in the landscape areas of Southern Nam Truong Son.

Southern Truong Son landscape has a total area of ​​3.3 million hectares, of which the total forest area is ​​more than 1.4 million hectares, mostly natural forests. In Southern Truong Son landscape, there are about 4,000 species of vascular plants, 100 species of mammals, nearly 400 species of birds, 100 species of reptiles and amphibians. According to statistics, currently in the area, there are nearly 200 vascular plant species and 123 species of vertebrates on land with high conservation value.

From 2005 to 2011, the area of ​​natural forest in Southern Truong Son landscape sharply declined in the area and quality of forest. In average, there are about 27.300 hectares of lost forest area annually.

On the conference, delegates agreed to propose a strategic solution to enhance forest management and biodiversity conservation, including forest sustainable restoration, development and management, in situ conservation of endangered and rare species and animals; develop material forest planting and process diversified forest products; strengthen State management of biodiversity, etc.
