A ground breaking ceremony was held on July 1 in Van Thai commune, Ung Hoa district in Hanoi to mark the construction of an animal waste treatment system under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) protocol.
According to Nhan dan (People) Newspaper Online, this is the first system using the CDM protocol in the northern region of the country. The nearly 33 billion VND (155,000 USD) project will help develop renewable energy sources and transform animal waste into biogas-run electric power.
Once completed in August, the system is expected to provide 2MW of electricity per day to the national grid and supply a large number of sludge for fertiliser production to serve growing clean vegetables and ornamental plants.
Hanoi has currently 1.4 million pigs, 20 million poultry and 170,000 cattle. The capital has spent around 100 billion VND (4.7 million USD) to treat waste from the animal breeding, slaughter and processing industry over the past years.
