University campus project wins global silver prize

Update: 26/05/2009
A project to build a low-impact greenfield university campus in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho has won the Silver of the Global Holcim Awards 2009. The project was designed by Kazuhiro Kojima and Daisuke Sanuki from Japan and Vo Trong Nghia from Vietnam.

The low-impact greenfield university campus aspires to achieve harmony with all elements of the surrounding ecosystem in the middle of the Mekong River Delta: the waters of the river and the flooding of the rice fields, the mangroves, the winds and their patterns as well as with the seasonal changes of light and shadow.

The Global Holcim Awards competition is held annually by the Holcim groups to honour construction projects, which help improve life and reduce impacts on the environment, looking towards a sustainable future.

Global Holcim Awards 2009’s Gold went to the river remediation and urban development scheme for Fez river, Morocco by John Ferri, Takako Tajima, Aziza Chaouni and Dan Brunn, while the Bronze was given to Yue Zhang with sustainable planning for a rural community in Beijing, China.
