Truong Son muntjac rescued and released into natural environment

Recently, the management board of the Saola Natural Reserve have said that they had discovered and released into the natural environment a Truong Son muntjac, which weighs about 7kg.

Truong Son muntjac was discovered in A Luoi district, Thua Thien Hue province. After being removed from the snare in which it was trapped and checked for injury, the animal was released back into its natural environment.

Mr. Le Ngoc Tuan, Director of the management board of the Saola Natural Reserve in Thua Thien - Hue province, said that Truong Son muntjac live in a small area in Quang Nam province. Due to the limited area of old growth forest which is their habitat, they are easy to hunt or be snared.

Truong Son muntjac has not yet been fully researched to have firm data on its numbers and habitat. Truong Son muntjac (scientific name of Muntiacus truongsonensis) is a species of muntjac deer. It is one of the smallest muntjac species, at about 15 kg, half the size of the Indian muntjac. It was first discovered in the Truong Son mountain range in Vietnam in 1997./.
