Celebrated every June 5 since 1972, World Environment Day is an opportunity to rethink our daily relationship to natural resources.
Implemented in the framework of the United Nations Environment Program, the day raises recurring issues related to the protection of the environment and its impact on the quality of life of people and the survival of our planet. This Thursday, June 5, 2014, tourism stakeholders on Reunion Island will offer the general public the practice of eco-friendly leisure activities.
Reunion Island has been committed to an environmental policy for many years as a destination. It is part of a strategy that allows it to both promote itself and make a sustainable natural and cultural environment, including through:
- National Park Reunion created March 5, 2007;
- Natural marine reserve established on February 21, 2007;
- The Pitons, cirques, and ramparts of the island’s World Heritage of UNESCO since August 1, 2010; and
- Sensitive natural areas established since 1995.
The environment is a capital concept to Reunion Island also through sustainable tourism. It is about creating green economies for weaving and maintaining links between nature and people, both parties actively involved in the implementation of a prosperous environment.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, which takes place next Thursday, June 5, the tourism industry of the island mobilized to provide the experience of an eco-friendly activity to the public.
