Many ancient craters discovered on Ly Son’s seabed

Update: 16/09/2016
After long time of research, archeologists discovered many ancient craters with interesting ecosystem around Ly Son island district (Quang Ngai province). This information was released by Quang Ngai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism on September 8.

Mr Nguyen Tuan Lam, underwater archaeologist said that Ly Son island district can be considered a "museum" of volcanic eruptions, which accumulated many cultural values, crustal formation and existed human civilization millions of years ago.

Besides the two large craters traces on the mountain Thoi Loi andGieng Tien on the island, the scientists also discovered 6crater  underseabed with abundant ecosystems within 40km around the island. In particular, the largest diameter’s underground crateris about 7 nautical miles.

Earlier, experts also discovered a 30-meter ancient crater adjacent to the shore of Ba Lang An in Binh Chau Commune, Binh Son district. The place with ecological topography extends with many pretty unique basalt beaches and rock ballad columns.

Dr. Nguyen Hoang, experts from the Institute of Science and Technology (Japan) said that volcanic activity in Ly Son island district occurred in two main waves. The earliest one was around 11 million years ago and the nearest one was ranging from 3,000 to 1 million years ago relevant to crust formation. The time was similar to the volcanic activity in coastal areas of Binh Chau and Ba Lang An.

Ly Son has 70%volcanic terrain of the total area. Many monuments were created from lava eruptions of the volcano such as craters on the top of mountains of Thoi Loi, Gieng Tien, Hang Cau, Hang Pagoda, Duc Pagoda, archway on the shore and underwater. In addition, volcanic sedimentary cliffs stretching along Ly Son island and coastal area of Binh Chau commune (Binh Son district) have great value for tourism.

"This can be considered a natural museum of rare volcanic activity in the world, deserves to be recognized as a Global Geopark", admitted experts.
