Minister Tran Hong Ha received Karmenu Vella - EUCommissioner for Environment at the Headquarters of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on November 18 to discuss the cooperation of Vietnam - EU in the field of natural resources and environment.

Minister Tran Hong Ha said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has cooperatedactively with EU countries like the Netherlands, Denmark, UK and France in the fields of environment, biodiversity conservation, climate change, etc. However, direct cooperation with EU via the EU mission in Vietnam is still limited, only via coordinating with other host ministries/sectors.
At the meeting, Minister Tran Hong Ha proposed EU to shareexperience in exercising inspection andprevention of environmental pollution, biodiversity conservation...
With the experience of EU, the minister believes that Vietnam willinherit the achievements of advanced countries to be able to carry out its plans on greeneconomy, green growth and proceed theImplementationPlan of Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
The minister also hopes the two sides will work closely together to come up withthe appropriate management models and multi-purpose research models ranging from biodiversity conservation climate change responsewith the support of EU. Thus, create a carbon sequestrationecosystem to cope with climate change and generate economic value via conservation activities.
* Also in the afternoon of November 18, Minister Tran Hong Ha had a courtesy meeting with Zhang Xinsheng, President of The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources(IUCN) on his visit to Vietnam to attend the conference on illegal wildlife trafficking in Hanoi from November 16 – 18, 2016.
During the meeting, both sides discussed the cooperation between IUCN and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in the field of natural resources and environment. Minister Tran Hong Ha said that in the time to come, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment expected IUCN to support Vietnam in establishing and developing the projects regardingnatural resouces and environment.
Currently, Vietnam is working with the countries subjected to MFF regional program including Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand to construct the project "Sustainable developmentof livelihoods in response to climate change based on ecosystems. "
In addition, Vietnam proposed IUCNto jointly organize a workshop on water resources management in the Mekong Delta region. The objective of this workshop is to discuss, share experiences among local and foreign scientists, policy-makers to build thestrategy on water retention in the Mekong River Delta upstream and thespecific measures to ensure irrigation for dry season.
At the same time, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment expected IUCN to assist int capacity building in the aforementioned areas through exchanges of experience, expertise and technology transfer.
