PM takes helicopter tour of climate change-hit areas in Mekong Delta

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc took a helicopter tour of areas hit by climate change in the Mekong Delta on September 26.

It was to prepare for a plenary session of the conference on shaping the shift to sustainable development model adaptive to climate change in the Mekong Delta with a vision to 2100 to be chaired by the PM in Can Tho city on September 27. 

Earlier in July, the government leader also toured sea dykes and irrigational works on helicopter during the Netherlands visit. 

During the September 26 session chaired by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, participants extensively discussed opportunities and challenges in shifting to sustainable development model. 

The Minister of Planning and Investment chaired a session on a master plan on the Mekong Delta development and rallying resources for regional growth. 

Sustainable agriculture, irrigational infrastructure, disaster and landslide prevention were also tabled for discussion.

As part of the Mekong River lower course, the Mekong delta region contributes nearly 18 percent of the national gross domestic product with 90 percent of rice export, around 60 percent of fisheries export and 70 percent of fruits output nationwide.-VNA
