The HCMC Flood Control Center on Thursday started fortifying the banks of Ba Bo Canal and building sidewalks along the 1.7 kilometer waterway in Binh Chieu Ward, Thu Duc District.
Construction will include concrete banks, foot bridges across the canal, 6-meter-wide foot paths along the canal and a huge wastewater reservoir.
In April, the flood control center began construction of the reservoir that can hold 250,000 cubic meters of wastewater discharged from industrial parks and families.
The project is invested with some VND307 billion. The center is asking the city government to increase capital to VND744 billion to properly clean the canal, according to an official of the center.
The project is expected to reduce pollution upon completion in 12 months, said Nguyen Phuoc Thao, director of the center.
The Ba Bo Canal is the main drainage for an area of 1,400 hectares in Binh Duong Province and 160 hectares in HCMC’s Thu Duc District. It is also receiving wastewater from some 10,000 families and many industrial parks, according to the center.
The canal has been heavily polluted for years due to the untreated wastewater discharged from several industrial parks in Binh Duong Province.
