Ha Long city, which overlooks the World Heritage Ha Long Bay, on Oct. 8 gained ASEAN’s first-ever award as one of the 10 most environmentally sustainable cities in the south-east Asian region.

Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan said that the images and information about the cities would be valuable pointers for other cities in the region, especially for Vietnam, in the quest to become a green city of clean land, clean air and clear water.

She said she hoped that the event would encourage better cooperation between ASEAN cities on the environment, energy and climate change.

The award is designed to promote environment-friendly cities and improve government and public awareness on the importance of environment protection.

The other cities obtaining the award were Temburong in Brunei, Phnom Penh in Cambodia, Palembang in Indonesia, Luang Prabang in Laos, North Kuching City Hall in Malaysia, Taungyi in Myanmar, Puerto Princesa city the Philippines, Southwest Community Development Council in Singapore, and Bangkok in Thailand.
