The Con Chim peninsula in the central province of Thua Thien Hue has been designated as a lagoon reserve by the provincial People’s Committee.
The 23.6ha peninsula and surrounding areas provide a habitat for several species of brackish water grass and day, a fish endemic to Tam Giang-Cau Hai lagoon where the peninsula located. It is also a natural spawn area.
All fishing, aquaculture and construction are prohibited in the Con Chim reserve, the decision released on November 16 said, and the area is designated for research and eco-tourism.
Tran Quang Vinh Binh, director of the province’s seafood resource exploitation and protection chapter, said the reserve would be run first on a pilot basis and would be expanded in future.
The Government has given approval to designate the lagoon, the largest in Southeast Asia, as an inland lagoon reserve, he added.
