International community pledge to help Vietnam deal with climate change

Coming back from the United Nations Summit Conference on Climate Change hosted in Copenhagen (Denmark), Mr. Pham Khoi Nguyen, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, said: Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the Vietnamese senior delegation have made vital imprints contributing to bringing developed and developing countries together in the fight against the threat of climate change.

After bilateral and multilateral talks, Vietnam received support and helping commitment of international community in dealing with climate change, including Denmark (US$53 million), United Nations Development Program (US$8 million), Japan (US$450 million of preferential loan), the World Bank…

In addition, Vietnam also received help from the Netherlands with sea-dyke technologies, Denmark with medical waste treatment system, the United States of America with improving capacity of meteorological and hydrographic system and dealing with flood-tide in southern provinces.

Nguyen said that Vietnam – being among top five countries most affected by sea-level rising – has developed a national target program to deal with climate change since December 2008.

Vietnam has set out its goals to mobilize financial funding of US$3-5 billion by 2015 and from 2010 to focus on 5 key areas: developing and reinforcing sea-dykes in Mekong delta; concentrate on protective forest, watershed forest and particularly mangrove forest to prevent sea waves and floods; preventing flood-tide in southern provinces; developing anti-climate change project in Mekong delta; and improving weather-forecast system…
