The three Mekong Delta provinces of Ben Tre, Tra Vinh and Soc Trang have agreed to ask the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to recognize the Cuu Long Estuary Biosphere Reserve, located in the three provinces.
The agreement was reached after Dr. Nguyen Hoang Tri, Secretary General of the National Committee of the Vietnam Human and Biosphere Programme, suggested the establishment of the Cuu Long Estuary Biosphere Reserve.
This reserve will have a total area of over 568,000 ha along over 200km of coast in the districts of Thanh Phu, Ba Tri and Binh Dai in Ben Tre Province, Duyen Hai, Cau Ngang, Chau Thanh districts in Tra Vinh Province and Long Phu, Vinh Chau in Soc Trang Province.
The three provinces hope that UNESCO recognition will help preserve biodiversity in this area.
