(TITC) - On 1st December 2022, in Ha Noi, Michelin organised a press conference to announce the inaugural MICHELIN Guide Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City selection set for public release.
Attending the event were Mr. Doan Van Viet, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, Chairman of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism; Mr. Ahmad Faiez Mohamed Pisal, Managing Director of Michelin Vietnam; Ms. Elisabeth Boucher-Anselin, MICHELIN Experiences Director of Communication; Mr. Chris Gledhill, Director - MICHELIN Guide, East Asia, Australia & Middle East for Michelin; and representatives of several organisations, press and television agencies.
Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City join the list of destinations covered by the MICHELIN Guide’s inspectors, marking a historical turning point for Vietnamese cuisine.
Giving his remarks via online platform, Mr. Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides sends his preferences for Vietnamese cuisine. Vietnam has a fascinating food heritage and history, distinctive and unique flavours, iconic recipes and well-known delicates, and Vietnamese cuisine has carved its way to popularity around the world.

The reason why Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City are the latest destinations joining the international selection of the MICHELIN Guide, Mr. Gwendal Poullennec stated the facts, Ha Noi is the capital of Vietnam, where centuries old architecture lie with a rich food heritage, due to its proximity to the sea and historical trade connections. Additionally, the cultural charms and culinary traditions of Ha Noi spread everywhere, in every corner of the city, on the streets and in small shops. Likewise, Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s economic hub, a place of mixed European influences and local traditions. The food scene in Ho Chi Minh City is lively and vivid with an array of offerings ranging from small shops to high-end restaurants.
With a team of inspectors from all over the world, Michelin cannot wait to present the first Vietnamese restaurant selection, which the famously anonymous inspectors have already started to realise in the field. Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City are two gourmet gems which deserve to be fully celebrated, Mr. Ahmad Faiez Mohamed Pisal, Managing Director of Michelin Vietnam talked about the bright future and great potential of Vietnamese cuisine on the world map.

For the first time in the Guide’s history, the MICHELIN inspectors will evaluate quality restaurants in Vietnam’s two largest cities. The full restaurant selection of the MICHELIN Guide Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City 2023 will be unveiled at a special event to be held in June 2023.

MICHELIN Guide was created in 1900 by the Michelin tire company to support the growth of automobile mobility. Since then, it has remained loyal to its original mission: “to settle in mature gastronomic destinations to guide international travellers and local foodies to the best restaurants, highlight world culinary scenes and promote the travel culture”
The restaurant selection of the MICHELIN Guide Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City will be independently made by the famous anonymous MICHELIN inspectors following the Guide’s historical and global methodology. The 5 international criteria of the Guide include:
- The quality of the products
- The mastery of cooking techniques
- The harmony of flavours
- The personality of the chef represented in the cuisine
- The consistency both over time and across the entire menu.
