Safe-tea project launched in 35 provinces

Update: 12/11/2008
A project to train farmers in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)-oriented production of safe tea was launched at a conference in the northern province of Phu Tho on Nov. 11, 2008 attracting over 100 participants from 35 cities and provinces across the country.
The application of the GAP to tea production will help farmers to improve their products and consolidate their brands by raising their awareness of food safety, responsibility to the community, and access to advanced technologies, said Bui Sy Doanh, Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Participants at the conference discussed procedures in safe tea production and the use of insecticides and fertilizers, watering, harvest and post-harvest maintenance.

The project will be carried out in 35 localities through cooperation between the MARD, the An Giang Plant Protection Company and all of the major tea-producing provinces as part of the national action plan for food hygiene and safety.
